Impetigo and contact with cats

Impetigo is a bacterial infection affecting the outer skin. Human-to-human contact, scratching and shared fabrics are common ways bacteria move. A cat can still scratch or bite, and any animal wound needs prompt cleaning because it is a separate exposure. A crusted rash may also reflect another problem, including Atopic Dermatitis or a symptom such as Crusting Skin, so do not diagnose it from pet contact alone.

Care at home

Wash hands after touching lesions, dress open sores and avoid letting a cat lick affected skin, dressings or medicines. Keep personal towels, clothing and bedding separate, clean frequently touched surfaces and wash scratches with running water. Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading. Treatment may include Topical Antibiotic Therapy or Antibiotics For Skin Infection, selected by a clinician rather than by pet remedies.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care for a bite or scratch that becomes red, hot, swollen, painful or drains fluid. For the skin rash itself, obtain medical advice if lesions multiply, the face or eyes are involved, fever develops or the person feels unwell. Emergency help is needed for severe swelling, confusion or breathing trouble after an animal exposure.
