What should you know about IMP3 immunohistochemistry?

Immunohistochemistry uses antibodies carrying a visible marker to look for a particular protein in tissue. For IMP3, the pathologist examines whether staining is present, where it appears in the cells and how strong or widespread it is. The result is interpreted with the tissue pattern seen under the microscope, the biopsy location and the clinical question.

A positive or negative stain is not a diagnosis by itself. IMP3 expression can be seen in different tumour and non-tumour settings, and the meaning depends on the specimen and the panel of stains used. A pathology report may describe the finding as part of a broader diagnostic assessment.

Ask whether the IMP3 stain was performed to distinguish tumour types, support a suspected diagnosis or add information to an existing result. The pathologist may compare it with other immunostains, cell features and molecular tests. If the tissue sample is small or damaged, the team may explain that interpretation has limits or that further material is needed.

Keep the complete pathology report and ask the treating team to explain unfamiliar terms. Do not interpret the stain without the report's diagnosis and comment, because the same marker can have different significance in different tissues.

The stain itself does not usually create ongoing symptoms because it is performed on a tissue sample in the laboratory. Contact the biopsy or oncology team for increasing pain, redness, swelling, drainage or fever after a biopsy. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting or difficulty breathing.
