What should you know about Imodium for indigestion?

Indigestion can feel like upper-abdominal discomfort, early fullness, bloating, belching, or burning after eating. Imodium, also called loperamide, slows movement through the bowel. That action may help some forms of short-term diarrhoea, but it does not neutralise stomach acid or heal an irritated stomach lining. Taking it when you have indigestion without diarrhoea is unlikely to address the problem and may cause constipation or cramping. Recurrent symptoms can occur with acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer; indigestion can also accompany gallstones or Helicobacter pylori infection.

Check whether diarrhoea is actually present before considering an anti-diarrhoeal medicine. For indigestion, try smaller meals, eat slowly, and avoid lying down soon after eating. Notice whether spicy or fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine, or a late meal brings symptoms on. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an option aimed at acid reflux or another identified cause, and can review medicines that may irritate the stomach. Do not self-treat persistent or repeatedly returning symptoms without an assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, chest pain, trouble swallowing, or repeated vomiting. Arrange a clinical review if indigestion keeps returning, affects eating, or comes with unexplained weight loss, anaemia symptoms, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These features need evaluation rather than symptom suppression.
