What should you know about imiquimod warts?

The medicine helps the skin mount an immune response against certain wart tissue. It is not suitable for every bump, and a wart-like growth may need examination before treatment. Imiquimod does not remove tissue immediately; visible change may be gradual, and the surrounding skin may become red or inflamed as the immune response develops.

Common local effects include itching, burning, tenderness, flaking, scabbing or small sores. These effects can be uncomfortable and may extend slightly beyond the lesion. They should be discussed if they are intense, spreading or slow to settle. Avoid treating a different lesion because it looks similar.

Use the prescribed formulation on clean, dry skin, in the amount and frequency given by your clinician. Wash your hands before and after use, and avoid the eyes, lips, open wounds and mucosal surfaces unless your prescriber has given specific instructions. Let the cream absorb as directed and wash it off at the instructed time; do not apply a thicker layer to speed the process.

Do not pick scabs or scratch treated skin. Pause sexual contact involving the treated area if it is sore, and ask whether the product or skin changes could affect barrier protection. Attend review even if the wart appears smaller, because follow-up checks the response and looks for another cause of the growth.

Seek prompt advice for severe pain, spreading swelling, pus, marked bleeding, fever, extensive blistering or skin breakdown. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, widespread hives or swelling of the face or throat. If the lesion changes rapidly, becomes very hard, or fails to improve as expected, arrange reassessment rather than continuing indefinitely.

Ask whether the growth has been confirmed as a wart, which lesions to treat, how to handle missed applications, and what level of redness is acceptable. Discuss pregnancy, immune conditions, genital symptoms and how follow-up will be scheduled.
