What should you know about imiquimod vaginal?

Imiquimod stimulates a local immune response rather than acting like a simple moisturiser or cleanser. It may be prescribed for selected lesions, but the exact product instructions depend on the diagnosis and the area involved. Vaginal tissue and the skin around the opening are not interchangeable sites, so do not move the cream to internal tissue unless your clinician has expressly instructed you to do so.

Redness, soreness, burning, swelling, crusting or small areas of broken skin can occur where the medicine acts. These reactions can make urination or sexual activity uncomfortable. A strong reaction does not prove that treatment is working, and little irritation does not prove that it is failing.

Follow the prescribed amount, schedule and treatment area. Wash your hands before and after application, keep the medicine away from the eyes and mouth, and avoid covering the area unless instructed. Do not add fragranced products or other active creams to irritated tissue without checking first. If a dose is missed, follow the product instructions or contact the prescriber rather than applying extra medicine.

Ask how to manage contact with partners, whether sexual activity should pause, and whether condoms or other barrier methods may be affected by the formulation. Keep follow-up appointments so the treated area can be examined and the diagnosis reassessed if it does not settle.

Contact the prescribing clinician promptly for severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, extensive ulceration, heavy bleeding, inability to urinate, fever, or a reaction that prevents normal daily activity. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing or faintness, which may signal a serious allergic reaction. Stop and get advice if you are unsure whether the medicine has reached internal vaginal tissue.

Ask which tissue should receive the medicine, how long it should remain in place, what reaction is expected, and what should trigger a treatment break. Clarify pregnancy plans, breastfeeding, other creams, and the date of the review.
