What should you know about imiquimod topical?

The cream acts mainly where it is applied, helping the skin mount an immune response against the condition being treated. It is used for selected diagnoses, not for every bump, rash or spot. During treatment, the area may become red, itchy, scaly, crusted, swollen or sore. These changes can be uncomfortable and do not allow you to judge the final result without a clinical review.

The prescribed site matters. Avoid applying it to open wounds, eyes, lips or internal surfaces unless a clinician has specifically instructed you to do so. Tell the prescriber about other creams or procedures affecting the same area.

Apply a thin layer exactly as directed, usually to clean, dry skin at the planned time, then wash your hands. Leave it on for the instructed period and remove it as directed. Keep the packet away from children and do not use more often to speed improvement. Use gentle cleansing, avoid picking the treated skin and protect it from unnecessary friction and sun exposure.

If you miss an application, follow the written instructions or ask the pharmacy rather than doubling the next dose. Attend the review arranged for your condition, even if the skin appears improved.

Contact your clinician if the treated area becomes increasingly painful, develops heavy weeping, or prevents you from continuing normal activities. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, severe dizziness or extensive blistering. A new or changing lesion elsewhere also deserves assessment rather than treatment with leftover cream.
