What should you know about imiquimod liquid?

Imiquimod encourages a local immune response in selected superficial skin lesions. The treated area can become red, itchy, tender, scaly or crusted as the skin reacts. Liquid products may spread beyond the target more easily than a thicker cream, making careful placement especially important.

A liquid description does not by itself confirm that a product is appropriate for a particular rash or growth. Use it only after a clinician has identified the condition and explained the application method. Avoid applying it to open, infected or irritated skin unless specifically instructed.

Use the prescribed quantity and schedule, with clean, dry skin and clean hands. Apply a thin layer only to the intended site, avoid the eyes and mucous membranes, and wash your hands immediately afterward. Let the area dry before close contact with clothing or bedding.

Do not dilute, mix or transfer the liquid into another container. Keep it away from heat and children, and follow its own label for storage. Tell the prescriber if the liquid runs onto nearby healthy skin, if you miss an application, or if another topical product is being used there.

Get advice promptly if the treated skin becomes markedly swollen, ulcerated, very painful or infected-looking, or if irritation reaches the eyes. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread blistering or peeling, or feeling faint after application.

Ask how to measure and place the liquid, whether the area should be covered, and what to do after a missed dose or accidental spill. Ask when the expected reaction should settle and how the treated site will be checked.
