What should you know about IDC and triple-negative breast cancer?

Invasive ductal carcinoma begins in a milk duct and has grown into nearby breast tissue. Triple-negative means testing did not find oestrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, or excess HER2 receptors on the cancer cells. These results help explain why hormone-blocking medicines and HER2-directed medicines are not the usual foundation of treatment.

The report may also describe tumour size, grade, lymph-node findings, and stage. These details are different from receptor status and together guide decisions. A pathology review and imaging may be used to define the extent before a treatment sequence is chosen.

Your team may discuss Chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, or Immunotherapy, depending on stage, biopsy findings, general health, and whether treatment is planned before or after surgery. Some people may be assessed for PARP Inhibitor Therapy when inherited or tumour-related repair-gene findings make it relevant.

Bring your pathology and imaging questions to the breast team. Ask whether receptor testing has been confirmed, whether genetic counselling or testing is appropriate, and how each treatment could affect fertility, work, hair, nerves, immunity, or recovery.

Contact your breast or oncology team promptly for a rapidly changing breast swelling, new skin redness or ulceration, worsening pain, fever, or drainage after a procedure. During treatment, report fever, chills, breathlessness, chest pain, severe diarrhoea, or an allergic reaction urgently because these may need same-day assessment.

Ask what IDC features and stage are present, whether the receptor results are definitive, why a particular treatment comes first, and how response will be checked. Discuss clinical-trial availability only if your team raises it, and ask who to call day or night for treatment symptoms.
