What should you know about ichthyosis nigricans?

Ichthyosis refers to a group of disorders in which the outer layer of skin does not shed normally, leaving visible scale and dryness. The word nigricans points to a darker colour, but dark, thickened skin can also have other causes. Location, texture, onset, family history and associated symptoms help a dermatologist separate these possibilities.

Scaling may be more noticeable on the limbs or trunk, while friction, dry air, hot bathing and harsh cleansers can make roughness more apparent. This appearance is not a diagnosis by itself and does not tell you how serious the underlying cause is.

Use short, lukewarm showers and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat rather than rub the skin dry, then apply a thick moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Regular emollient therapy can soften scale and support the skin barrier; do not pick or scrub the flakes.

Take a clear photograph if the appearance changes, and note when it began, where it occurs, whether it itches, and which products affect it. A clinician may recommend a tailored moisturiser or another treatment after examining the skin.

Arrange a routine dermatology or primary-care assessment if the darkening or scaling persists, spreads, keeps returning, or remains unexplained. Seek prompt care for rapidly changing skin, significant pain, warmth, swelling, oozing, crusting, fever, or widespread blistering. Urgent assessment is also sensible if severe itch prevents sleep or normal activities.
