Ichthyosis in dogs: what to know

Dogs with ichthyosis may develop dry flakes or larger scales on the trunk, abdomen, limbs, or face. Some have a genetic form that begins early in life; other skin diseases, parasites, allergies, or infection can look similar. A veterinarian may examine the coat and skin, review age of onset and family history, and take samples when needed.

Scaling can trap oils, debris, and microbes. It may be accompanied by odour, itching, redness, hair thinning, or darkened skin. The condition may require continuing management rather than a single treatment.

Arrange a veterinary examination before starting human creams or medicated products. Follow the prescribed bathing schedule and leave any veterinary shampoo on for the directed contact time. Rinse thoroughly, dry the coat well, and use only a pet-safe moisturiser recommended by the vet. Do not pull off scales or use harsh scrubs.

Wash bedding regularly and note where scaling, scratching, odour, or hair loss changes. If several related dogs are affected, tell the veterinarian because inherited patterns may matter.

Seek veterinary care promptly for raw or bleeding skin, pus, marked pain, spreading redness, strong odour, fever, reduced appetite, or unusual tiredness. Emergency help is appropriate if your dog has breathing trouble, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening illness.

Could another condition be causing the scales? Which shampoo and moisturiser fit my dog’s age and skin? How often should bathing occur? What signs suggest infection? Should relatives be assessed or breeding discussed?
