Ibrance and letrozole: what should you know?

Ibrance is the brand name for palbociclib, a medicine that blocks proteins involved in cell-cycle progression. Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that lowers the body’s production of oestrogen after menopause. Together, they can slow the growth of some breast cancer cells that use hormone signals.

This combination is not suitable for every person or every breast cancer. Your oncologist considers hormone-receptor results, previous treatment, menopausal status, other illnesses, medicines, and the condition of the cancer. Treatment may be adjusted or paused if side effects or blood-test results require it.

Take both medicines exactly as prescribed and keep the treatment calendar provided by your oncology team. Palbociclib is commonly taken in repeating treatment cycles, with planned time away from the capsules; your own schedule may differ. Let the team know about every prescription, supplement, and herbal product before starting or changing it.

Blood tests help check white cells, red cells, platelets, and liver function. Tell your team about fever, chills, sore throat, unusual bruising, bleeding, mouth sores, diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness, or new breathlessness. Do not stop treatment or take a missed dose differently without instructions.

Contact your oncology team urgently for a temperature or other signs of infection, because palbociclib can lower infection-fighting white cells. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious allergic reaction. Report new joint or muscle pain and persistent hot flushes so letrozole side effects can be managed.

Ask what the treatment is intended to achieve, how your cycle is organised, which blood-test results affect the next dose, and which medicines or foods should be avoided. Ask how bone health, joint symptoms, fertility concerns, contraception, and menopause-related effects will be addressed.
