What should you know about IBC rash?

IBC refers to inflammatory breast cancer. Its skin changes can include redness, warmth, swelling, heaviness, tenderness, or a dimpled texture sometimes described as an orange peel. The breast may change shape, and the nipple may become inverted or develop discharge. These features can overlap with infection or irritation, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

A breast rash is not automatically cancer. Conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, or Scabies can also affect breast skin, each needing a different assessment and treatment.

Arrange an urgent clinical assessment for new, spreading, or persistent breast skin changes, especially when swelling or warmth is present without a clear cause. Note when the change began, whether one breast is affected, and any lump, pain, fever, nipple change, or discharge. Avoid starting steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams on the area unless a clinician recommends them, because they may alter the appearance without addressing the cause.

Seek same-day medical advice for rapidly worsening redness, marked swelling, severe pain, fever, feeling faint, or an area that is hot and spreading. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, collapse, or severe illness. Even without these warning signs, a new breast rash that does not settle promptly deserves examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask whether the pattern suggests infection, dermatitis, or another breast condition; whether breast imaging or a skin or breast biopsy is needed; and which changes should prompt you to return quickly.
