What should you know about hypothalamic glioma?

The hypothalamus sits close to the optic pathways, pituitary gland and fluid spaces of the brain. A glioma there may affect vision, growth, puberty, sleep, appetite, thirst, body temperature or hormone regulation. Symptoms can be subtle, and a scan may show a mass without revealing its exact grade or cell type. Specialists combine neurological examination, brain imaging, hormone tests and sometimes tissue analysis.

A neuro-oncology team reviews the imaging and checks vision, hormone function, development and daily functioning. Surgery may be used to obtain tissue, relieve pressure or remove what can be reached safely; because the hypothalamus is delicate, complete removal is not always the aim. Brain Tumour Surgery and Radiotherapy may be considered according to tumour growth, symptoms, age, location and molecular findings. Endocrine support can help replace or balance affected hormones.
