Hypopigmentation and White Spots

Short answer
Hypopigmentation white spots have several possible causes, so their shape, surface, symptoms, and pattern should be assessed before treatment is chosen.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding white spots
A white-looking spot may reflect reduced melanin, post-inflammatory change, dryness, or a surface infection. The colour can appear stronger after sun exposure because nearby skin darkens. Fine scale may point toward Tinea Versicolor, while itch and a history of irritated skin can occur with Atopic Dermatitis. The edges, symmetry, number of patches, and involvement of hair or nails can help a clinician narrow the possibilities. White Patches On Skin is a related symptom guide. Colour alone cannot confirm a diagnosis, and different causes need different treatment.
What you can do
Take clear photographs in similar light and note when each patch began, whether it itches or flakes, and any preceding rash, injury, or new product. Use gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid picking and harsh exfoliation, and apply sunscreen to exposed skin. Do not use antifungal, steroid, bleaching, or pigment-stimulating products without a diagnosis. A dermatologist may treat an underlying infection or inflammation; selected cases may be considered for Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors or Excimer Laser Therapy.
When to seek care
Seek a routine appointment for a spot that remains, multiplies, spreads, or changes in texture. Request earlier review when patches are rapidly appearing, very itchy, painful, cracked, bleeding, or associated with hair or nail colour change. Get prompt care for fever, facial swelling, eye or mouth involvement, or a widespread rash after a medicine.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what features support the diagnosis, whether a surface sample or other examination is needed, and whether treatment should target inflammation, infection, or pigment. Ask how long to wait for colour recovery and which changes should prompt an earlier appointment.

Questions people ask
Are all white spots vitiligo?
No. White or lighter spots can follow inflammation, dryness, infection, or other pigment changes. Examination is needed to distinguish them.
Should white spots be covered from the sun?
Protect exposed skin with sunscreen and clothing. This reduces tanning contrast and helps prevent sun irritation on lighter areas.
