What should you know about hydroxycitrate and kidney stones?

Kidney stones form when substances in urine crystallise and collect. Hydroxycitrate has been studied as a substance that might affect crystal formation, but a supplement cannot be assumed to dissolve an existing stone or prevent all future stones. The useful approach depends on the stone's composition, urine chemistry, kidney function, fluid intake and other medicines. A history of dehydration can increase stone risk. Pain from a stone may travel from the flank towards the abdomen or groin, and urinary symptoms can occur when a stone moves or irritates the urinary tract.

Arrange a GP consultation if you have suspected stone symptoms or want advice about hydroxycitrate. A clinician may review your medicines, examine you, test urine and blood, and choose imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound. Drink fluids according to medical advice; people with kidney or heart conditions may need an individual plan. Do not rely on a supplement to manage severe pain, infection or blocked urine. If a stone is passed, ask whether it should be collected for analysis.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening flank or abdominal pain, fever or chills, vomiting that prevents drinking, blood in the urine, or difficulty passing urine. A blocked urinary system with infection can become dangerous. Prompt assessment is also needed if you have one functioning kidney, are pregnant, or cannot control the pain with the plan given to you.
