What should you know about humerus plate and screws?

The humerus runs from the shoulder to the elbow. After a fracture, a surgeon may position the bone fragments and secure them with a metal plate fixed by screws. The hardware supports alignment; your own bone still needs time to repair. The plate may be placed near the shoulder, along the shaft, or closer to the elbow, depending on the fracture. It is not automatically removed once the skin incision heals. Some people notice tenderness, stiffness, or altered sensation around the scar during recovery.

Follow the surgeon's limits on lifting, pushing, pulling, and shoulder or elbow movement. Keep the wound clean as instructed and attend imaging or rehabilitation appointments so alignment, healing, strength, and range of motion can be checked. A physiotherapist may guide gentle exercises before progressing to active movement. Do not use the arm for heavy tasks simply because pain has eased, and do not change pain medicine without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for a newly cold, pale, blue, or numb hand; rapidly worsening pain or swelling; inability to move the fingers; or bleeding that will not stop. Contact the surgical team promptly if the incision becomes increasingly red, hot, open, or draining, or if fever develops. A fall or new impact to the arm also warrants assessment, especially if the shape changes or movement suddenly becomes harder.

Ask which part of the humerus was repaired, what movements and loads are currently allowed, how healing will be checked, and which symptoms should trigger a same-day call. You can also ask whether any numbness near the scar is expected and when physiotherapy should progress.
