What should you know about human neuroblastoma cells?

Neuroblastoma develops from cells involved in the body's developing sympathetic nervous system. The tumour often begins near the adrenal glands in the abdomen, but it can arise elsewhere along the nerve pathways. It may affect nearby organs, blood vessels, bones or bone marrow, depending on where it has developed.

Doctors assess the child's symptoms, examination findings and imaging. Urine and blood tests can look for substances made by some neuroblastoma cells, while a biopsy can show the tumour's cellular features. The age of the child, tumour location, spread and laboratory findings help the team describe risk and choose care.

Use the specialist team's appointments to clarify which tests are complete and which are still needed. Treatment may involve removing the tumour, chemotherapy, or a combination. For selected tumours, targeted radioisotope therapy may deliver radiation to cells that take up a specific medicine. The sequence depends on the child's findings and response.

Keep a record of pain, fever, appetite, bowel or bladder changes, weakness, sleep and medicines. Ask about infection precautions, nutrition, movement and emotional support. Children may need coordinated care from oncology, surgery, radiology, nursing and rehabilitation professionals.

Seek urgent medical help for fever during cancer treatment, breathing difficulty, a seizure, sudden weakness, severe pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, dehydration, or a child who is difficult to wake. Contact the oncology team promptly for new bruising, reduced urine, worsening abdominal swelling, or pain that is not controlled by the prescribed plan.
