What should you know about huge swollen lip?

Lip swelling can follow an allergic reaction, a new medicine, an insect bite, contact with an irritant, dental problems, infection or injury. Angioedema is a condition involving deeper swelling that can affect the lips and sometimes the tongue or throat. The timing matters: a sudden change after food, medicine or a sting differs from swelling that develops with warmth, redness, pain or discharge. A photograph and a list of recent exposures can help a clinician assess the pattern.

Stop using a new lip product and avoid the suspected trigger while arranging medical advice. Do not apply unprescribed creams inside the mouth or take someone else’s medicine. If a clinician has already given you an emergency allergy plan, follow it. Note when the swelling began, whether it is spreading, and any rash, pain, fever, mouth or dental symptoms.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing saliva, voice change, tongue swelling, dizziness, collapse, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Seek prompt medical review for fever, pus, severe pain, warmth, a dental source, or swelling that keeps worsening. Do not wait for a lip-only symptom to resolve if the mouth or throat is involved.

Ask whether the episode resembles Angioedema, allergy, infection or trauma; which medicines or products could have contributed; and what to do if it happens again. Confirm which symptoms require emergency action and whether dental or allergy follow-up is needed.
