Short answer

A Hudson spirometer is a breathing-measurement device that records how much air you move and how quickly you move it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the result means

During a breathing test, you breathe through a mouthpiece while your nose is usually closed with a clip. The device turns your airflow into measurements that can be compared with your symptoms, examination and expected values. It may help a clinician assess airflow limitation, follow a known lung problem or check how breathing changes after an inhaled medicine.

The instrument does not diagnose a condition by itself. A result can be influenced by effort, technique, tiredness, recent illness and whether the mouthpiece is sealed well. A clinician interprets the pattern rather than relying on one number.

How to prepare and take part

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the testing centre's instructions about meals, smoking and inhalers. Tell the clinician about chest discomfort, recent surgery, an infection, pregnancy or medicines that may affect the test. You will be shown how to seal your lips, breathe in fully and blow out hard and steadily. Several attempts are common because repeatable efforts make the reading more useful.

Sit or stand as instructed, keep the mouthpiece clear and tell the tester if you feel light-headed. A brief pause usually helps; do not force yourself to continue through significant discomfort.

When to get help

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness at rest, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion or chest pressure that does not settle. Contact a clinician promptly if breathing becomes noticeably worse after testing, or if coughing, wheezing or chest tightness persists. These symptoms need assessment rather than being attributed automatically to the device or the test.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which breathing measurements were reduced, whether the test was technically adequate, and how the findings fit with your symptoms. You can also ask whether medicines should be changed before a repeat test and what warning signs should prompt urgent care.

Questions people ask

Is a Hudson spirometer the same as spirometry?

The spirometer is the device; spirometry is the breathing test performed with it.

Can the test feel uncomfortable?

Forceful blowing may cause brief coughing or light-headedness, so tell the tester if you need a pause.
