Short answer

To ease Braxton Hicks contractions, change position, rest, drink water, and empty your bladder while noticing whether the tightening settles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What Braxton Hicks contractions mean

Braxton Hicks contractions are temporary tightenings of the womb that can occur during pregnancy. They may feel like the abdomen is becoming firm, then relaxing. Unlike established labour, they commonly remain irregular and may reduce after rest, hydration, a position change, or stopping activity. They should not steadily become closer together and stronger.

Ways to settle the tightening

Pause exertion and sit or lie on your side in a comfortable position. Sip water and use the bathroom, because dehydration or a full bladder can make tightening more noticeable. A warm shower may help you relax; avoid very hot water. Gentle breathing, loosening tight clothing, and a light change of activity can also reduce discomfort. Keep track of when tightenings begin, how long they last, and whether they are becoming regular.

When to contact maternity care

Contact your maternity unit promptly if tightenings become regular, painful, or increasingly strong, particularly before your expected due period. Seek urgent advice for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced fetal movement, fever, severe abdominal or back pain, or pressure in the pelvis. These symptoms can occur with preterm labour and need assessment rather than home observation.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask what pattern of tightening is expected at your stage of pregnancy, how to time contractions, and which maternity number to call outside clinic hours. Ask whether your hydration, work, exercise, or previous pregnancy history changes the advice for you.

Questions people ask

Can walking ease Braxton Hicks contractions?

Walking may help some people change focus, but stop if tightening becomes stronger or regular and reassess with your maternity team.

Should I time Braxton Hicks contractions?

Timing them can show whether they remain irregular or develop a repeating pattern, which is useful when speaking with maternity care.
