How to control Braxton Hicks?

Short answer
You can often ease Braxton Hicks by changing position, resting, drinking water, and emptying your bladder, but persistent or painful tightening needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Try first
- Rest, change position, drink water, and empty your bladder.
- Track
- Record the start, duration, and spacing of tightenings.
What Braxton Hicks are
Braxton Hicks are practice tightenings of the womb. They may feel like the abdomen becoming firm and then relaxing. They are often irregular and may settle when you rest or change activity, whereas labour contractions tend to develop a more consistent pattern.
Your experience can vary from mild pressure to uncomfortable cramping. The sensation alone cannot confirm whether labour has started, particularly if you are unsure how far along the pregnancy is.
Ways to settle the tightening
Pause strenuous activity, sit or lie comfortably, and change position. Sip water and empty your bladder. Gentle breathing, a warm—not hot—shower, or a supported walk may help you find a more comfortable position.
Notice when each tightening starts, how long it lasts, and whether the gaps are becoming shorter. Do not take medicines or use supplements to stop contractions unless your maternity clinician has advised you to do so.
When to call your maternity team
Contact your maternity team urgently for regular tightenings that continue despite rest, increasing pain, vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, fever, reduced fetal movement, or strong pelvic pressure.
If these symptoms occur before term, prompt assessment matters because preterm labour can begin with contractions, pressure, backache, or fluid changes. Use your local maternity emergency number if you cannot reach your care team.
Useful questions
Ask when your team wants you to call, how to time contractions, which comfort measures are suitable for you, and how to monitor fetal movement.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks be painful?
They can be uncomfortable or cramp-like. Pain that intensifies or follows a regular pattern should be discussed with your maternity team.
Do Braxton Hicks mean labour has started?
Not necessarily. Irregular tightenings may settle, but ongoing regular contractions or warning symptoms require assessment.
