How is threadworms different in children?

Threadworms, also called pinworms or enterobiasis, are tiny worms living in the bowel. A female worm can lay eggs around the anus, often while a child is asleep. This commonly causes itching at night, restless sleep, scratching, sore skin or irritability. Some children have no obvious symptoms. You may notice small white thread-like worms around the anus or in underwear, but their absence does not rule out infection.

Children can pass eggs to their fingers while scratching and then to toys, bedding, bathroom surfaces or food. Hand-to-mouth habits make repeated infection easier. The condition is uncomfortable but usually limited to the gut; it is not a sign that a child is unclean.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician about an age-appropriate treatment, because product instructions and suitability vary with age. Treatment may need repeating according to the product plan, since medicines target worms more readily than eggs. Household members may need advice or treatment together to reduce passing the infection back and forth.

For several days after treatment, keep fingernails short, encourage careful handwashing after toileting and before meals, and wash the child each morning. Change underwear and sleepwear regularly, launder bedding and towels, and avoid shaking fabrics. Clean frequently touched bathroom surfaces. Do not share towels, and discourage nail biting or finger sucking.

Arrange medical advice if itching continues after the recommended treatment plan, keeps returning, or causes broken skin. Seek help if a child has significant abdominal pain, vomiting, marked tiredness, weight loss, vaginal irritation or discharge, or a very sore rash. A clinician can check whether threadworms fit the symptoms and consider another cause when the pattern is unusual.
