How quickly do topical corticosteroids relieve skin redness?

These medicines reduce local inflammation, so redness caused by conditions such as eczema or contact dermatitis may settle as the inflammation calms. A noticeable change does not prove that the underlying trigger has gone. Redness can persist when the diagnosis is different, the irritant is still touching the skin, infection is present, or the treatment is too mild for the affected area.

Skin on the face, folds and genital area absorbs medicine more readily than thicker skin on the body. A product suitable for one site may be too strong for another, and prolonged or frequent use can cause problems such as thinning, visible small blood vessels or acne-like changes.

Apply the prescribed product in the amount and pattern advised, usually to the affected skin rather than as a general moisturiser. Wash your hands after applying it unless your hands are the treated area. Continue moisturising if recommended, and avoid adding a stronger steroid or extending the course because redness has not settled.

If there is no clear improvement after the instructed course, or the redness returns soon after stopping, arrange a review. The clinician may need to check the diagnosis, exposure to an irritant, treatment technique or whether another medicine is needed.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is rapidly spreading, very painful, hot or swollen, or accompanied by fever, pus, blistering, skin peeling or red streaks. Get urgent help for redness around the eye with vision changes, severe eye pain or marked swelling. Do not use a steroid alone on a suspected infection unless a clinician has advised it, because it can mask or worsen some infections.

Ask which strength is intended for this body area, how often to apply it, how long to continue, and what improvement should look like. Also ask whether a moisturiser, trigger avoidance or a different treatment should be used alongside it.
