Why the response varies
A lymph node can enlarge because of cancer, infection or another immune response, so its cause matters. The oncology team uses your examination, symptoms and planned scans or tests to judge response. A node may feel different before its size is formally assessed, and temporary tenderness or swelling does not by itself show whether treatment is working.
What to do during treatment
Take chemotherapy exactly as prescribed and keep scheduled blood tests and reviews. Note where the swelling is, whether it changes, and whether you have pain, redness, difficulty swallowing or breathing. Do not repeatedly press or massage a node unless your clinician advises it. Ask before using over-the-counter medicines for fever or pain because they can affect assessment.

Contact your treatment team promptly for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, redness, or a fever during chemotherapy. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, or swelling of the face or neck.
