Short answer

Mastitis during breastfeeding is inflammation in breast tissue that can cause a tender, swollen, warm area and flu-like symptoms; feeding usually does not need to stop.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How breastfeeding changes the picture

Milk production and milk removal can make breast tissue feel full, uneven, or tender, so a painful area is not automatically mastitis. Mastitis may involve a firm or swollen region, warmth, redness, and increasing soreness. Fever, chills, body aches, or marked fatigue can occur when inflammation affects the whole body. It may follow a missed feed, pressure from tight clothing, or difficulty with latch, but it can also arise without an obvious trigger.

Breastfeeding or expressing milk is generally safe for the baby and can support comfort, but aggressive massage or trying to forcefully empty the breast may worsen swelling. A lactation professional can check attachment and feeding comfort.

Support your recovery

Continue feeding responsively if you can, beginning on the more comfortable side if direct feeding is painful. Use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods, rest, drink to thirst, and wear a supportive bra that does not press into the breast. Gentle hand expression may relieve pressure; stop if it increases pain. Ask a clinician which pain relief is suitable for you and your baby.

If symptoms are worsening, persistent, or repeatedly returning, arrange a clinical review. You may need help with latch, inflammation management, or treatment for an infection.

When to get medical help

Contact a clinician promptly if fever, chills, worsening redness, severe pain, or feeling very unwell develops. Seek review for a lump that remains after the breast softens, pus or blood from the nipple, or symptoms that do not begin to improve with supportive care. Urgent help is needed if you feel faint, confused, or unable to keep fluids down. A persistent collection may need examination and drainage.

Questions to bring

Ask whether the findings suggest inflammation, infection, a blocked area, or an abscess; whether you should continue feeding; which medicines are compatible with breastfeeding; and how to prevent a recurrence. Ask for a feeding assessment if latch or positioning may be contributing.
