How long does spirometry take to work for bronchiectasis?

Spirometry records airflow and lung volumes through repeated efforts to breathe out forcefully. In bronchiectasis, it can show the effect of airway disease on breathing, help assess severity and provide a baseline for follow-up. It cannot by itself confirm every cause of bronchiectasis or show the full structure of the airways. Clinicians may combine it with a history, examination, sputum assessment and chest imaging.

Follow instructions about inhalers and avoid changing treatment without advice. Wear loose clothing and tell the tester about a recent chest infection, chest pain, surgery or dizziness. Several attempts may be needed to obtain reliable readings. Bring a list of medicines and describe cough, sputum colour, breathlessness and changes in exercise tolerance, because these details help put the numbers into context.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, coughing up more than a small amount of blood, blue lips, confusion or sudden chest pain. Contact your bronchiectasis team promptly if sputum increases or changes markedly, fever develops, or breathing worsens. Do not wait for a scheduled spirometry appointment during an acute deterioration.
