How long does a sleep study take to work for obstructive sleep apnoea?

Obstructive sleep apnoea involves repeated narrowing or closure of the upper airway during sleep. A home or centre-based study may monitor airflow, breathing effort, oxygen level, heart rate, snoring, and body position. The recording shows whether breathing events occur and how sleep is affected; it does not open the airway or improve symptoms by itself. A clinician interprets the data with your symptoms, examination, and medical history.

Follow the sleep team’s instructions about applying sensors and keeping your usual bedtime routine. Tell the clinician about loud snoring, witnessed pauses, waking with choking, morning headaches, and daytime sleepiness. Attend the results review, because the next step may include positive airway pressure, a dental device, positional measures, weight-related support, or another option. Avoid driving when you feel drowsy, especially after monotonous journeys.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness while awake, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, or a medical emergency. Arrange prompt review if sleepiness causes near-misses while driving, symptoms suddenly intensify, or you repeatedly wake gasping.
