How long does a nerve root block take to work for sciatica?

A nerve root block places medicine near an irritated spinal nerve to help reduce pain and inflammation, and sometimes to help identify which nerve is contributing to symptoms. The immediate change may reflect the local anaesthetic; the later response may differ. Temporary heaviness, tingling or weakness can occur while the anaesthetic affects nearby nerves, so follow the clinic's safety instructions.

The injection addresses nerve-related pain but does not necessarily remove the underlying cause of sciatica. Your clinician may use the response to plan physiotherapy, activity changes, further tests or another treatment.

Arrange transport if instructed, protect the treated area, and avoid driving or demanding activity until sensation and strength have returned as advised. Note pain, walking tolerance, numbness and weakness over the next few days. Take only recommended medicines and attend follow-up, even if the first response is encouraging or brief.

Contact the procedure team for increasing injection-site redness, drainage, fever, severe headache, unexpected weakness or pain that is difficult to control. Seek urgent help for new bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the groin, rapidly progressing leg weakness, breathing difficulty or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Ask which response is expected on the day, how long altered sensation may last, when driving and exercise are safe, what outcome should be recorded, and what the next step will be if sciatica returns.
