The operation removes the disc material pressing on a spinal nerve. Pain caused by that pressure may settle quickly, although the irritated nerve can remain sensitive. Tingling or reduced sensation may fade more slowly, and strength returns according to how long and severely the nerve was affected. A sore back and incision are also expected during early healing, so improvement is not judged by the wound alone.

A temporary change in symptoms does not automatically mean the operation has failed. Recovery can vary with the size and location of the herniation, the condition of the nerve before surgery, and your general health.

Follow the surgeon's instructions for walking, wound care, lifting and sitting. Short, frequent walks are usually more useful than staying in bed for long periods. Increase activity in small steps, keep follow-up appointments, and use prescribed medicines as directed. Do not restart driving, heavy work or vigorous exercise until your clinical team confirms that your movement, pain control and reflexes make those activities appropriate.

Contact your surgical team promptly for worsening leg pain, new weakness, increasing numbness, fever, wound drainage or difficulty controlling pain. Seek urgent medical help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or rapidly progressing weakness. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for the next routine review.
