How long does a liver function test take to work for alcohol use disorder?

The test measures substances released or cleared by the liver, such as enzymes, bilirubin and proteins. Alcohol-related liver irritation can change some results, while results may remain within a usual range even when drinking is harmful. A clinician combines the report with your alcohol pattern, medicines, examination and sometimes imaging or additional blood tests.

Ask the testing service when your report will be released and whether you need preparation, such as avoiding food for a specified period. Do not stop alcohol suddenly without medical advice if you drink heavily or have had withdrawal symptoms; withdrawal can be dangerous. Arrange follow-up to discuss support for reducing or stopping alcohol and whether repeat testing is useful.
