How long does a GP consultation take to work for tonsillitis?

The clinician may examine your throat and neck, ask about fever, swallowing, cough and recent illness, and decide whether the pattern suggests a viral or bacterial infection. Some cases improve with supportive care, while selected bacterial infections may need prescribed treatment. Antibiotics do not help viral tonsillitis.

Pain and swelling may ease gradually rather than straight after the appointment. Rest, fluids and suitable pain relief can make swallowing easier; follow the label or clinical advice, particularly for children and people with other conditions.

Take any prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not share antibiotics. Drink frequent fluids, choose soft foods, rest, and avoid smoking or smoky rooms. Wash hands and avoid sharing cups or cutlery while unwell. Keep track of whether swallowing, fever and hydration are improving.

Get urgent medical help if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow saliva, you are drooling, your voice becomes muffled, or one side of the throat swells markedly. Seek review if symptoms worsen, dehydration develops, or improvement does not follow the plan given. These features can need assessment for a complication rather than a routine follow-up.
