How long does a GP consultation take to work for mumps?

The clinician may ask about fever, swelling near the jaw, headache, muscle aches and contact with anyone who was unwell. They may examine the face and neck and decide whether testing or follow-up is needed. The consultation cannot instantly remove swelling; advice is intended to support recovery and reduce spread.

Mumps is contagious. If it is suspected, follow instructions about staying away from school, work or close contacts. Do not share cups, utensils or towels, and wash your hands regularly. Tell the clinician about vaccination history and any significant medical conditions.

Rest, drink fluids and use only medicines recommended for you. Keep track of fever, pain, jaw swelling and your ability to eat or drink. Attend any arranged review and follow directions about testing. If you need to attend a clinic, phone ahead and mention suspected mumps so the service can reduce contact with other patients.

Get urgent help for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, seizures, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. New testicular pain or swelling also needs prompt medical assessment.

Ask how long you should avoid close contact, whether testing is recommended, how to manage pain or fever safely, and which changes require an earlier review. Ask when follow-up should occur if swelling or fever is not settling.
