How long does a GP consultation take to work for laryngitis?

The GP may ask when hoarseness began, whether you have a cough, fever, reflux symptoms or voice strain, and whether you smoke or use your voice heavily. They can examine your mouth and throat and decide whether this fits irritation, infection or another voice-box problem. Many short-lived cases improve with rest and fluids, but persistent hoarseness may need review or an ear, nose and throat assessment.

Use your voice gently and avoid whispering, shouting and repeated throat-clearing. Drink fluids, avoid smoke and other irritants, and follow any treatment advice from the GP. Keep track of changes in your voice, pain, swallowing and breathing so the next review is more useful.

Seek urgent medical help if breathing becomes difficult, you cannot swallow fluids, or swelling is rapidly worsening. Arrange a GP review if hoarseness is not settling, keeps returning, or is accompanied by coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, a neck lump or significant swallowing pain.

Ask what is the most likely trigger, how long to try voice rest, whether a medicine could be irritating your throat, and what change should prompt a follow-up or specialist referral.
