How long does a GP consultation take to work for conjunctivitis?

The GP may ask whether one or both eyes are affected, whether there is itching, pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or blurred vision, and whether you have had recent contact with someone who was unwell. They may examine the eye and eyelids. Viral conjunctivitis often improves with supportive care, while bacterial infection or allergy may need different advice. Antibiotic drops do not help every cause. Contact lenses can increase risk of complications, so mention them before treatment is chosen.

Use prescribed drops exactly as directed and wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Clean discharge gently with clean water and avoid rubbing. Stop wearing contact lenses until the eye has recovered and a clinician says it is appropriate to restart. If symptoms are not improving, or treatment causes irritation, contact the practice for review rather than adding another product yourself.

Seek urgent assessment for significant eye pain, marked light sensitivity, reduced or persistent blurred vision, severe swelling, an eye injury, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. These features can indicate a problem deeper than simple conjunctivitis. Sudden deterioration should not wait for a routine review.

Ask which cause is most likely, whether you need drops, when you can return to contact lenses, and how long to wait before arranging review. Tell the GP about eye conditions, medicines, allergies, and anyone at home with similar symptoms.
