The obstetric team uses ultrasound to check the baby’s position and wellbeing, then applies pressure to the abdomen to encourage a head-down position. The attempt may stop if it is uncomfortable, the baby does not move, or monitoring raises concern.

Afterward, monitoring checks the baby’s heart rate and your condition. A baby can sometimes return to a breech position, so later checks remain part of pregnancy care. If the turn is not successful, the team will discuss birth options based on your circumstances.

Follow the hospital’s instructions about food, medicines and arrival time. Arrange transport if advised, bring your maternity records, and tell the team about bleeding, fluid loss, contractions, reduced fetal movement or other new symptoms before the attempt. Ask how and when the baby’s position will be checked again.
