How long does closed reduction take to work for an elbow dislocation?

A clinician gently guides the elbow joint back into place, commonly with pain relief or sedation. Relief from the obvious deformity may be immediate, but the tissues around the joint have still been stretched or injured. A sling, splint, or brace may protect the elbow while swelling settles. Follow-up examination and imaging can confirm position and check for an associated fracture or nerve and blood-vessel problem. Stiffness is common when the elbow has been kept still, so the return of comfortable movement is gradual.

Use the sling or brace exactly as directed, keep the arm elevated when it swells, and move the fingers and shoulder if permitted. Avoid leaning on the elbow, forceful straightening, carrying loads, or returning to sport before clearance. Keep follow-up appointments; the clinician may introduce carefully limited bending and straightening, followed by strengthening when the joint is ready. Do not try to relocate the elbow yourself.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes pale, blue, cold, numb, or weak, or if finger movement suddenly worsens. Increasing pain or tight swelling, a new visible deformity, fever, drainage, or an injury to the braced arm should also be assessed promptly. These changes can signal altered alignment, pressure on nerves or blood vessels, or another injury.

Ask whether imaging found a fracture, how long the brace or sling is needed, which elbow movements are safe, and when physiotherapy should begin. Discuss sleeping positions, driving, work duties, lifting, and the signs that mean the joint may have slipped again.
