How long does caesarean section take to work for eclampsia?

A caesarean section for eclampsia can be arranged urgently after initial stabilisation, and the operation itself often takes about an hour. The priority is to protect your breathing, stop or prevent further seizures, control dangerously high blood pressure, and assess you and the baby. Delivery may follow promptly, but the exact route and timing depend on your condition, the baby’s status, labour progress, and whether vaginal birth is safe.

Eclampsia means a seizure associated with pregnancy or the period after birth and requires emergency treatment. The team may give anticonvulsant medicine, oxygen, blood-pressure treatment, and intravenous fluids while monitoring you closely. Anaesthesia, theatre staff, newborn clinicians, and blood-testing support may be assembled quickly. Caesarean birth removes the pregnancy but does not instantly correct every effect of eclampsia, so monitoring and treatment continue after delivery.

If you are pregnant or recently gave birth and have a seizure, call emergency services immediately and do not put anything in your mouth. Keep the area clear, place you on your side when safe, and note how long the seizure lasts. Do not drive yourself. In hospital, tell clinicians about headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, medicines, allergies, and any previous high blood pressure. Follow instructions about monitoring and medicines after birth.

A seizure, severe or persistent headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, confusion, severe pain under the ribs, breathlessness, chest pain, or sudden swelling needs emergency assessment. After a caesarean, seek urgent help for another seizure, severe headache that does not improve, heavy bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening abdominal or wound pain.
