How Long Do Real Contractions Last?

A contraction is the tightening and relaxing of the womb. Early labour may bring irregular tightenings that vary in strength. With established labour, contractions commonly become more predictable, last longer, feel stronger and arrive with shorter gaps. Braxton Hicks tightenings may ease after rest, hydration or a change of activity; true labour contractions usually continue despite those changes. The cervix may soften, shorten and open as labour advances, although only an examination can assess that change.

Use a clock or contraction timer to record when each tightening starts, how long it lasts and the interval from one start to the next. Rest, drink fluids and try a comfortable position if you are otherwise well. Keep your maternity unit's contact details available, and follow the personalised instructions given for your pregnancy. If labour may be early, ask promptly about assessment for preterm labour and treatments that may be considered, such as antenatal steroid injection or cervical cerclage.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if contractions are regular and intensifying, especially before your expected due date. Seek immediate advice for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, reduced fetal movement or a strong urge to push. Do not wait to achieve a particular contraction duration when any warning sign is present.
