How long after Braxton Hicks does labour start?

Braxton Hicks contractions are often irregular and do not steadily become stronger, closer together, or longer. They may ease after rest, drinking water, changing position, or emptying the bladder. True labour contractions usually develop a pattern, become harder to talk through, and continue despite these changes. Only an examination can show whether the cervix is opening.

The presence of Braxton Hicks contractions alone cannot predict the day labour will start. If contractions occur before the stage of pregnancy your maternity team considers full term, they may need assessment because preterm labour can begin with tightening, pelvic pressure, backache, fluid leakage, or a change in discharge.

Pause and note when each tightening starts and ends, then record the gap from one start to the next. Drink fluids, rest on your side, and try a gentle change of position. Keep your maternity unit's contact number available and follow the personal instructions in your birth plan. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell or contractions become difficult to manage.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, a gush or steady trickle of fluid, reduced fetal movement, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, or regular painful contractions. Call promptly as well if you are before full term and contractions continue, even if they are not yet very painful. Seek emergency help for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or heavy bleeding.
