How is hives treated?

Hives are raised, itchy areas that can appear suddenly and change location. They may follow an infection, medicine, food, heat, pressure, or another trigger, although a clear cause is not always found. Angioedema is deeper swelling that may affect the lips, eyelids, tongue, hands, or feet. Hives lasting or recurring over a longer period may be chronic hives.

A clinician may recommend a non-drowsy antihistamine treatment and review its timing and dose. Cool compresses, loose clothing, and avoiding heat or known triggers can reduce discomfort. Oral corticosteroid treatment may be used for a severe flare in selected situations and only under medical direction. Keep a record of new medicines, foods, illnesses, and physical triggers to help identify patterns.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or trouble swallowing. Prompt medical review is also appropriate when a rash is painful, bruises, lasts in one spot, or comes with fever or marked illness.
