How is sunburn treated?

Sunburn is an ultraviolet injury that can cause warmth, tenderness, redness and sometimes fluid-filled blisters. The damaged outer layer may later shed as peeling skin. Move out of direct sun and take a cool bath or shower; avoid ice directly on the skin. Apply a clean, cool, damp cloth for short periods, then pat dry gently. Use a bland moisturiser or [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) while the skin is still slightly damp. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and do not pick peeling skin or break blisters. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable anti-inflammatory medicine is appropriate. Avoid products that sting, including fragranced products, until the skin settles.

Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, intense pain, fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, dehydration, or signs of infection such as spreading redness or pus. Urgent assessment is sensible after a severe burn in a young child, or when the face, eyes, hands or genitals are affected.
