How is strep throat treated?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat. Fever, painful swallowing, red or swollen tonsils and Swollen Glands can occur, but these findings overlap with viral illnesses. A GP Consultation can review your symptoms, examine your throat and decide whether a swab or other assessment is needed. Scarlet Fever and Tonsillitis are related possibilities that may need separate consideration.

If Antibiotic Treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Do not share doses or use medicine left from another illness. Drink regularly, rest and choose easy-to-swallow foods. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief that fits your age, pregnancy status, allergies and other medicines. Wash hands and avoid sharing cups while unwell.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are not improving, you cannot take the prescribed medicine, or a rash develops. Seek urgent help for Difficulty Swallowing that prevents drinking, breathing problems, drooling, a muffled voice, severe neck swelling or confusion. Fever with marked deterioration also needs prompt assessment.
