How is Sever's disease treated?

Sever's disease, also called calcaneal apophysitis, affects the growth area at the back of a child's heel. Repeated running and jumping can irritate this area while the heel is developing. Treatment aims to reduce strain and keep the child comfortable; it does not require removing all movement.

Pause or reduce activities that trigger heel pain, then return gradually as walking and light activity become comfortable. A wrapped cold pack after activity may ease soreness. A clinician may suggest calf and hamstring stretches, cushioned shoes, a heel lift or custom orthotics, and paediatric physiotherapy to improve flexibility and movement control. Do not force painful stretches or use pain medicine without advice about the correct choice and dose for your child.

Arrange an assessment if pain causes limping, continues despite rest, returns whenever sport resumes, or affects both activity and sleep. Seek prompt care after a significant injury, or if the heel is markedly swollen, red, hot, numb, or the child cannot bear weight. These features may need a different evaluation.

Ask which activities can continue, whether a heel lift or custom orthotics would help, how often to stretch, and what signs should guide a return to sport.
