How Is Ringworm Treated?

Ringworm is caused by fungi, not a worm. It may form an expanding, scaly rash with a more active edge, although appearances vary by body site. A skin rash or scaly skin can have other causes, so a clinician may inspect the area and test skin when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Topical antifungal treatment is commonly used for limited skin infection and must be applied exactly as directed, including to the surrounding skin when advised. Oral antifungal treatment may be needed when infection affects the scalp or nails, covers a wider area, or does not respond to topical care. Keep the area dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or hair tools.

Seek medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, beard, nails, face, or genitals, spreads despite treatment, becomes painful or swollen, or affects a child. Prompt review is also sensible if another household member or pet has a suspicious rash, because reinfection can occur.
