How is mumps treated?

A clinician may assess swollen salivary glands, Fever, mouth pain, and other symptoms. Soft foods, fluids, and suitable pain relief can make eating and drinking easier. Stay away from school, work, and close contact for the period advised by a clinician, and do not share cups or utensils. Mumps can occasionally affect other organs, so new symptoms deserve medical review.

Arrange a GP Consultation if mumps is suspected, especially after exposure or if you are not protected. Rest, drink regularly, and use medicines only as directed. Avoid strenuous activity when unwell. Check with a clinician before giving medicines to a child. MMR Vaccination helps prevent mumps but does not treat an existing infection.

Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, breathing difficulty, dehydration, persistent vomiting, or a seizure. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe Testicular Pain or increasing abdominal pain. Worsening Swollen Glands, inability to swallow fluids, or a persistent high Fever warrants medical advice.
