How is meniscus tear treated?

The meniscus is a shock-absorbing cartilage pad in the knee. Treatment depends on the tear's location and pattern, symptoms, age, activity needs, knee stability and associated changes such as Knee Osteoarthritis. Pain, swelling, catching and reduced movement are considered together; a scan may help define the injury, but examination still shapes the plan.

At first, reduce twisting, pivoting, deep squats and impact that provoke symptoms. Ice, elevation and a temporary support may help swelling when advised. Physiotherapy can restore knee movement, thigh strength, balance and a gradual return to activity. If symptoms persist, the knee locks, or the tear is suitable for preservation, Knee Arthroscopy may be used to assess and treat it. Meniscus Repair preserves tissue when feasible; Partial Meniscectomy removes only unstable damaged tissue when repair is unsuitable.

Seek prompt assessment for a knee that locks, gives way repeatedly, swells substantially after injury or cannot fully straighten. Urgent care is appropriate after a major injury with deformity, inability to bear weight, severe swelling or a hot red joint with fever.
