How is chlamydia treated?

A clinician may confirm the infection with a urine sample or a swab, then choose an antibiotic based on your situation, pregnancy status, allergies and possible infection at another site. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not share leftover tablets. Chlamydia can cause no symptoms, so a partner may need testing even if they feel well.

Tell the clinician about current medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any pain or discharge. Avoid sexual contact until the clinician says it is safe and partners have received the advice they need. Arrange any recommended repeat test or review, especially if symptoms continue. Use condoms consistently afterwards to reduce the chance of another sexually transmitted infection.

Seek prompt medical care for lower abdominal pain, fever, pain during sex, bleeding after sex, or bleeding between periods. Testicular pain or swelling needs urgent assessment. Untreated infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which may affect fertility and cause ongoing pelvic pain.

Ask which antibiotic is prescribed, when sexual contact can resume, whether partners need treatment, and whether you need tests for other infections or a follow-up sample.
