How is flu vaccination different in pregnancy?

Pregnancy changes the immune system and places extra demands on the heart and lungs. Influenza can therefore cause more severe illness, especially when breathing or underlying health is affected. The usual pregnancy vaccine is an inactivated injection; it cannot give you influenza. Antibodies made after vaccination cross the placenta and may offer the baby some protection during the first months after birth, when the baby is too young for routine flu vaccination. The vaccine can be given during any trimester when advised, and seasonal timing matters because protection is not lifelong.

Tell your maternity team or family doctor that you are pregnant, how far along the pregnancy is, and whether you have had a previous vaccine reaction. Ask where the seasonal vaccine is available and arrange it when offered. Mention fever, acute illness, allergies, immune conditions, and medicines before the appointment. After vaccination, a sore arm or feeling tired may occur briefly. Rest, drink fluids, and ask your maternity clinician which symptom relief medicines are suitable for you. Keep antenatal appointments even if you have been vaccinated.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading itchy rash after vaccination. Contact your maternity team for persistent high fever, worsening illness, reduced ability to drink, or breathing symptoms. If you develop influenza-like symptoms during pregnancy, call promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to become severe; early assessment can guide treatment and monitoring. Seek urgent pregnancy care for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement according to your maternity team’s instructions.

Ask which vaccine is suitable in your pregnancy, when you should receive it, and how it fits with other scheduled vaccines. Ask what to do if you feel unwell on the appointment day, which reactions are expected, and whom to contact if influenza symptoms appear.
