How effective are topical corticosteroids for insect bites?

A bite triggers local inflammation, which can produce a raised, itchy patch. A prescribed or pharmacist-recommended corticosteroid may quiet that response and reduce scratching. Relief can be limited when the reaction is extensive, when a retained stinger is present, or when the skin has become infected. Some people develop repeated itchy spots after bites, while others have a stronger whole-body response; the appearance alone cannot determine the cause.

Wash the area gently, use a cool compress, and avoid scratching. If advised to use a corticosteroid, apply a thin layer only to intact affected skin and follow the stated duration. Do not place it on an open wound, near the eyes, or beneath a tight dressing unless a clinician directs you. Check for and safely remove a visible stinger rather than digging into the skin. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, dizziness, fainting, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face.
