Hypothyroidism means the body has too little available thyroid hormone for its needs. Blood tests commonly measure thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroid hormone. A raised thyroid-stimulating hormone with low free hormone can support a diagnosis, while milder or changing patterns require careful interpretation. Testing can also help a clinician adjust thyroid replacement, but the result must be considered alongside symptoms, medicines, pregnancy, recent illness, and the timing of any dose. One result does not explain every symptom.

Tell the clinician about tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, hair changes, low mood, concentration difficulty, or changes in periods. Provide a complete list of medicines and supplements, including thyroid tablets and products containing biotin. Take thyroid medicine exactly as prescribed unless the testing team gives different instructions.
